Protective coatings are required for the operation of several safety-critical components in industries and technology. High-temperature coatings play an important role in shielding underlying materials from thermal stresses. These coatings typically allow process equipment to function in settings that would otherwise fail due to the uncoated components' operating limits. Their influence on society is significant, as these coatings are used in various critical industries, such as energy generation and aircraft. The application of such coatings depends on their durability, simplicity of application, reparability, dependability, and long-term performance. The invention of the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) design, now a mature commercial technology and still a very active research subject, was one of the most important achievements of material science research over the previous century. As a result, the research and review papers in this Special Issue of Coatings, “Corrosion and wear resistant advanced coatings for typical engineering applications”, are devoted to metallic, non-metallic, and composite coatings used in aggressive environments. In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Corrosion-resistant coatings made via thermal spraying for solid oxide fuel cells.
- Power plants, the automobile industry, and jet engines can all benefit from thermal barrier coatings and coatings that are resistant to corrosion and erosion at high temperatures.
- Coatings that resist corrosion and erosion are used in the hydropower, offshore oil, and chemical sectors.
- Techniques of thermal spraying aided by additive manufacturing for use in hostile situations.
- Thermal spray coatings for anti-icing and super-hydrophobic surfaces.
- Thermal spray coatings with many layers, functional gradations, and intelligence.
